Reports must be submitted every week by the end of the day on Wednesday.
The report should be submitted as a single, complete PDF file that comprises:
- An overview of the work from the last weeks. This should be handwritten in the laboratory notebook and then scanned. Make sure to include the yield and the scale of reactions.
- Scans of all laboratory notebook pages from last week. Sometimes a page or two might appear in two reports if an experiment spans two periods.
- All supporting spectra, images, and data. Make sure to include reference spectra, especially starting materials. Spectra should be labeled with both the notebook reference code and a meaningful label, e.g. the data from the meta file.
- A weekly individual laboratory inspection form (available here or in the “labels” drawer on the workbench in CB313).
As part of your report, ensure that all experiments (including notebook scans, all digital data, and the metadata) have been stored on the group server and that the metadata is up to date.
While there are many ways to scan and compile PDF files, Adobe Scan is best method that I have found. Adobe Scan is free, works on Android and Apple phones, and generates good scans of notebooks and papers. The copiers in the office will also generate PDF scans. To compile PDFs from multiple files, I use Adobe Acrobat Pro to merge pdf files. Adobe Acrobat Pro is available on the library computers and can probably be installed on our group computers.
Reports will be checked for:
- Timely submission
- Presentation of results and comparisons
- Completeness of overview
- Notebook pages and electronic data storage
- Inspection form
